Standard Pallets vs. Automated Warehouse Pallets (AS/RS Pallets)
The key point: Standard pallets just need to be usable, while AS/RS pallets must be "precise, non-deformable, high-strength, and dimensionally precise." Even slight imperfections can cause jamming and damage to shelving.
1. Dimensional Accuracy (Most Significant Difference)
Standard Pallets: Dimensional tolerances are relatively loose, generally ±3~5mm is considered normal, and they only need to appear square to the naked eye.
AS/RS Pallets: Require extremely high precision. Length and width tolerances are typically within ±1~2mm, with even stricter control over diagonal errors.
Because stacker cranes automatically grasp items, even slight imperfections can prevent the forks from accurately reaching the storage location.
2. Flatness and Deformation
Standard Pallets: Slight warping and dents do not affect manual/forklift use.
AS/RS Pallets: Absolutely must not be warped or deformed.
Unevenness will cause the forks to wobble when raised, making it easy for goods to fall, scratching shelving, and triggering equipment alarms.
3. Structural Strength and Rigidity
**Standard Pallets:** Suitable for manual, manual forklift, and standard motorized forklift operation.
**Automatic Warehouse Pallets:** Require higher bending and shear strength because:
* Stacker cranes have high inertia during high-speed start-stop and emergency stops.
* Mostly used for high-level storage, requiring extremely strict deflection control.
* Typically uses thickened ribs, one-piece molding, and reinforced structures.
4. Material and Stability
**Standard Pallets:** Wood, plastic, and steel are all acceptable; material stability requirements are generally low.
*Automatic Warehouse Pallets:** Prioritize virgin HDPE plastic pallets and steel pallets.
* Reject materials that are easily deformed, absorb water, or crack (such as ordinary wooden pallets and plastic pallets with a high proportion of recycled materials).
5. Bottom Structure (Fork Holes and Entry Method)
**Standard Pallets: Two-sided or four-sided entry is acceptable; there are no strict requirements for fork hole shape and spacing.
*Automatic Warehouse Pallets:** Fork hole size, spacing, and depth must match the stacker crane forks. Commonly used are four-sided entry, grid-shaped bottom, 6 runners bottom, and reinforced 3 runners bottom designs to ensure stable gripping and prevent slippage.
6. Applicable Scenarios
**Regular Pallets:** Suitable for ground handling, standard shelving, forklift operations, temporary storage, and field handling.
**Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) Pallets:** Suitable for automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), intelligent warehousing, AGV handling, high-bay racking, and cold chain automated storage and retrieval systems.
**Simple Conclusion:** For ordinary warehouses and manual forklift operations: Regular plastic/wooden pallets are sufficient and cost-effective.
**For automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), AGVs, and stacker cranes: Dedicated automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) pallets are essential; otherwise, they can easily cause jams, equipment damage, and production line downtime.
The lightweight nine-leg nestable plastic pallet is an innovative and stylish packaging solution designed for general cargo storage and transport. It’s made of virgin HDPE or PP, featuring in space-saving due to its nine hollow feet design for nesting and cost-effectiveness.
The three-runner closed-deck hygienic plastic pallet is a solid and durable packaging solution designed for general and especially food and medicine storage and transport. It’s made of virgin HDPE or PP, featuring a flat surface and even bottom for hygienic consideration, a reinforced configuration with steel cores for rack and shelf, and a steady loading capacity.
The six-runner plastic pallet, open or closed deck, is a solid and durable packaging solution designed for general and medium to heavy-duty cargo stacking, storage and transport. It’s made of virgin HDPE or PP, featuring in robust structure, a reinforced configuration with steel cores for the rack and shelf, and a steady loading capacity.
The double-sided plastic pallet, open deck or closed deck, is a solid and durable packaging solution designed for general and medium to heavy-duty cargo stacking, storage and transport. It’s made of virgin HDPE or PP, featuring a robust structure, a reinforced configuration with steel cores for the rack and shelf, and a steady loading capacity for both sides.
