Static load describes the weight a pallet may support while stationary on a flat, properly supported surface. Dynamic load concerns movement by forklift, pallet truck, or conveyor and is affected by fork spacing, speed, impact, floor condition, and load distribution. Rack load is a separate category because the pallet may be supported only at edges or rails. Buyers should request the test method, support configuration, load type, safety factor, and deformation limit behind each rating. Comparing isolated numbers is unreliable unless the test conditions are equivalent. ISO 8611 provides standardized methods for determining pallet performance, but its use does not automatically make every pallet suitable for a particular warehouse. Validation should reproduce the buyer’s actual support and handling conditions.

Repeated handling damage is better investigated through impact, drop, bending, compression, and repeated-load evaluations than through a single static loading result. Important variables include empty-pallet nesting or stacking, fork-entry geometry, corner impacts, load eccentricity, temperature, and the number of handling cycles. Ask for failure photographs, deformation measurements, and the conditioning used before testing. A controlled sample trial should include the buyer’s forklifts, conveyors, racks, and typical load. Surface whitening, hinge fatigue, broken feet, loose weld areas, and progressive sagging can indicate different failure mechanisms. Buyers should also inspect returned or aged units where possible, because a new pallet’s initial rating does not describe its complete service life.

A food or pharmaceutical application requires more than the phrase food grade. Buyers should identify the destination market, the intended food or product contact, cleaning chemicals, temperature range, and whether the pallet contacts packaged goods or exposed product. Request a material declaration identifying the polymer and relevant additives, together with migration or suitability documentation applicable to the intended jurisdiction and use. For recycled content, establish whether it is permitted for the contact scenario; recycled material may be appropriate for transport applications but not automatically for direct contact. Chemical compatibility should be reviewed against the actual detergents, acids, solvents, and disinfectants used on site. Claims should be tied to documents and use conditions rather than treated as universal approval.

ISPM 15 addresses wood packaging material, including solid-wood pallets and related wood components used in international trade. A pallet manufactured entirely from plastic is generally outside the scope of the wood-treatment and marking requirements because it is not wood packaging material. However, buyers should check the destination country’s customs, carrier, retailer, and customer rules, especially when pallets contain wood blocks, wood components, or mixed packaging. Plastic does not remove the need for accurate commercial documents, dimensions, weight data, and import compliance. Request a construction declaration showing the pallet materials, then confirm requirements with the importer or customs broker for the specific trade lane.

A useful quotation package should identify the drawing revision, external dimensions, pallet mass, polymer type, color, load-rating definitions, and any tolerance that affects equipment fit. It should also state the test method and support conditions used for reported performance, rather than presenting one unexplained load number. Depending on the application, request a material declaration, safety data relevant to additives or coatings, food-contact documentation where applicable, country-of-origin information, packaging details, and sample or inspection terms. For customized products, clarify tooling ownership, approved sample status, change-control procedures, MOQ, lead time, and acceptance criteria. Certificates should be checked for issuing organization, product scope, date, and whether they apply to the quoted model rather than a similar item.

Automated storage and retrieval systems are sensitive to dimensional variation, pallet stiffness, foot geometry, edge condition, and sensor visibility. Buyers should provide the system manufacturer’s interface requirements, conveyor rail spacing, transfer points, rack support details, allowable pallet deflection, barcode or RFID locations, and the operating temperature. Verify overall length, width, height, squareness, underside clearance, entry openings, and mass against the equipment specification. A sample run should test induction, transfers, stops, retrieval, rack placement, empty-pallet handling, and loaded behavior at operating speed. ISO 6780 can support dimensional classification, but it does not replace a site trial because individual automation systems impose additional mechanical and control requirements.
