What specs matter when sourcing nestable plastic pallets for export?

ISO and regional pallet footprints directly determine how many loaded units fit per container. The common international footprints are 1200x1000 mm and 1200x800 mm (Euro/GMA variants); the North American GMA pallet is 1219x1016 mm (48x40 in). Use the pallet footprint and your palletized box footprint to plan layer orientation and number of tiers. For example, a 20-foot ISO container internal length ~5898 mm and width ~2352 mm (and a 40-foot internal length ~12032 mm) are standard references. Calculate both single- and double-row loading, account for dunnage and aisle clearance, and validate by creating a simple CAD packing layout or asking the supplier for a container-loading diagram. These layout checks avoid last-mile surprises and reduce per-unit freight by ensuring you ship full palettes per TEU/FEU rather than loose or inefficiently oriented loads.

Primary choices are HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene). HDPE generally provides better impact resistance and low-temperature performance; PP can be stiffer and more chemical-resistant to certain solvents. Crucially, request the supplier’s material data sheet and Certificate of Analysis (COA) that lists melt flow index, tensile strength, and UV stabilizer content. For outdoor export exposure or long transit cycles insist on UV-stabilized formulations and ask for accelerated weathering test data (e.g., ASTM G154 or equivalent) if UV exposure is expected. For food or pharmaceutical exports require explicit food-contact compliance documentation (FDA 21 CFR or EU Regulation No 10/2011) and any migration testing reports the buyer’s market mandates.

Two measurements matter: the empty-nest height and the loaded stack height. Nestable pallets save volume when empty because their deck geometry allows inward nesting; the nest ratio (how many empty pallets equal the height of one nested group) should be quantified by the supplier as ‘nested height per N pallets’. Calculate container capacity for empties by dividing container clear internal height by the nested height. For loaded shipments calculate layers per container using loaded pallet height and securement requirements. Require dimensional drawings with nominal and tolerance heights from the manufacturer and verify with a physical sample to avoid miscalculations—small mm differences multiply over hundreds of pallets and create significant freight-cost variance.

Ask for standardized test reports: ISO 8611 is the accepted standard for pallet strength/performance testing and covers static, dynamic and racking conditions. Static load is the maximum load supported when stationary on a flat surface; dynamic load applies when the pallet is moved (forklift application); racking load is capacity when supported only at the edges in a rack. Do not accept unqualified claims—require the laboratory test certificate, date, test method, and testing laboratory accreditation. If the shipper uses racking systems, insist on racking-rated pallets and verify the exact test conditions and safety factors. For critical applications, specify test conditions (e.g., temperature) and request batch-level verification or third-party testing to mitigate supply-chain risk.

Wooden packaging is subject to ISPM 15 phytosanitary measures; plastic pallets are not governed by ISPM 15 because they are not made of raw wood. However, plastic pallets still require regulatory compliance depending on destination: food-contact markets require FDA or EU plastics regulations; hazardous-material handling or chemical exports may require chemically compatible materials and documented resistance tests. Always check importer-country sanitary or environmental rules: some jurisdictions require proof of recyclable content or specific labeling. For customs clearance, prepare standard export documentation (commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin) and any requested material certificates or attestation of compliance to the destination market’s standards to avoid hold-ups.

At minimum, require the manufacturer to provide: batch number, manufacturing date, material grade/COA, and mold/tool identifier. For food-grade or regulated markets include food-contact compliance statements and any migration testing. For customs and logistics, provide packing lists that show pallet counts and net/gross weights, certificate of origin if requested by the importer, and supplier declarations for materials. Implement simple serialized labeling (barcode or QR) linked to a lot-level certificate to enable fast recalls and duty audits. For high-volume export programs require the supplier to keep traceability records for a minimum period (commonly three years) and to support third-party audits or factory inspections on request.
